Kevin Flynn walked along the beach, the shifting of the sand familiar under his bare feet. The sky was lightening, and there weren't many clouds, just as he'd hoped.

In three hours, he'd get on the plane for California. CalTech awaited, with its scholarship and challenges and work opportunities. All the tinkering and making up of stuff that drove his Mom to distraction with the occasional mess that he complained about her straightening up before he was finished and made his Dad grin a bit now and again, when he could explain what he'd managed (or almost managed) to do - all of those would be behind, he'd have people who could understand him, who could occasionally challenge him into making his things even better. People who would give him tools and skills and knowledge.

Just as he needed it.

All his bags were packed, he'd said good-bye to his parents last night, although he'd be going back to pick up his bags in a few.

But there was another good-bye that he wanted to take, and this was the perfect morning for it.

He crouched down, less to huddle against the wind an more to run his hand along the sand, right where the strip moist from the withdrawal of the tide ended and the stretch dried by the breeze began. Took a handful of sand and let it flow down among his fingers.

There were sands in California.

There were beaches.

His eyes followed the grains of sand on their way down, and then went on and on along the stretch of the ocean to the first rays of the sun melting gold across the waves.

Kevin Flynn rose to his full height, the better to see.

This, he wouldn't have on the West Coast, and he couldn't really bring with him other than in his memory. Good thing it was a pretty damn fine memory, of course.

Glorious dawn, the way they could be in later summer. Bright, and full, and perfect over the ocean.

The youth spread his arms wide, wind playing with the waves of hair and light shining full upon his tanned face, and he hooted with joy.

He was going to go and show the entire world just what he could do. And they would be glad, and it would be perfect! Because he had these wings, you see. Imagination, and skill, and creativity, and energy.

What could possibly go wrong?

In the clear light of the new day dawning, he couldn't imagine such a thing.

And he liked it like that.
